The views across Cook Inlet of the Aleutian Range can be awesome and feature the great St. Augustine, Mount Iliamna, and Mount Redoubt volcanoes.Mount Redoubt is a cone-shaped volcano. It erupted in December 1989 and is famous for nearly downing a KLM 747 passenger jet that flew though its ash plume. Redoubt stands 10,197 feet high and is directly across Cook Inlet from Kenai and Soldotna. Mount Iliamna, another cone, erupted in 1978, sending steam nearly two miles above its summit. It's 10,016 feet high and sits west of Ninilchik. Mount Augustine sits on an island due west of Seldovia (which is south of Homer). According to the book "Roadside Geology of Alaska," Augustine is a relatively young 15,000 years old and has a history of explosive eruptions, one of which occurred in 1976. In 1986, air transportation was shut down in the region for several days by an Augustinian ash cloud. Augustine is 4,025 feet high. |
